My Favorite Face Oils Right Now

Steeped in ancient Ayurvedic tradition, these lovely oils may be the most luxurious of our selection. Uma claims that the secret formulas are passed down from the centuries old “gatekeepers of their craft”. All of the botanicals are raised on their own 100-acre meadow, chosen for its nutritious soil, and the website outlines a painstaking process of growing that ensures unparalleled purity of product. These ancient recipes have now been coupled with powerful modern science to create products that not only feel and smell luxurious but promise to transform the skin.

I was particularly drawn to the product because of the company’s boldly stated belief that “beauty, wellness and a fulfilled life go hand in hand”. One thing I know to be true is that happiness goes a long way in creating a radiant glow. I like their philosophy! AND the oils are wonderful too. They are beautifully packaged; although, the clear bottles may allow light to compromise some of the active ingredients. Frankincense oil is at the heart of many of their face oils, which I like. Studies have shown that its strong astringent capabilities may help to promote cellular turnover and skin tightening. They have a wide array of oils—both for the face and for general wellness. We strongly encourage you to explore that world of UMA Oils!

This legendary facial oil is one of my favorites. It is a go-to product when I want luxury, beautiful fragrance, and a bit of elegance. It is particularly good when you feel that you need some extra hydration. Rose oil is known for its many health benefits, in particular its emollient and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, the aromatherapy properties of rose are often used in natural medicines to calm and soothe and are believed to help with depression.
Rose de Mai Face Oil contains a rich array of natural ingredients, such as RoseHip, Evening Primrose, Rose Damascena, that are high in Vitamin C. Chilean Tree Bark lightens the complexion by reducing the skin’s melanin production. Tamanu Nut Oil prevents photo-aging and has strong free radical scavenging properties. Borage Seed Oil is rich in Gamma Linoleic Acid and helps to lessen the look of fine lines and wrinkles. This oil is 100% natural and is perfect any time of day to give your skin a bit of moisture.

This is a new find and I am in love! The say it is “like rehab for your skin!”—and I think they are right! The product is 100% natural. Seriously, I can practically feel the purity in this simple oil. There is one ingredient—Marula Oil—that’s it. Marula Oil is known to be high in fatty acids and antioxidants including Tocopherol (Vitamin E). Some studies have shown that it can improve hyperpigmentation and help diminish the appearance of fine lines. It is very absorbent, so your face does not feel slick, making it the perfect oil to apply at night if you don’t like that greasy feeling when laying down on your pillow. It is lightweight, so it is particularly well suited for mixing with your other creams or serums for an extra boost of moisture. The packaging, which id darling, is excellent in that it is opaque with a dropper dispenser, thus protecting the oil from exposure to light and air which can compromise its effectiveness. There is good science behind the efficacy of Marula Oil, so it may actually live up to the promise of the company’s claim that it will boost the elasticity of your skin.

When it comes to Retinol, I am a purest. I use a prescription grade Retin-A twice a week. That might be a little hard core for most people, so I thought I should give this well publicized oil a try. To be honest, I have been pretty impressed with the results. Sunday Riley uses trans-retinol ester. Scientific studies have shown that this ingredient is effective in combination with retinol, but it is a little sketchy as to whether the ingredient alone has the same effect. From personal experience, I can say that I did see results when using this oil nightly for an extended period of time. It certainly didn’t have the intense effects of Retin-A, but I could see a definite improvement in my overall skin texture.

The product contains Chamomile and Blue Tansy, among other ingredients, which are both known as anti-inflammation substances. Although the packaging actually states that it is fragrance free, this is definitely not the case. There is a distinctive fragrance to this oil, probably a product of the inclusion of neroli, blood orange, ylang ylang and vetiver. This could be a deal breaker if you are sensitive to strong smells. However, the packaging is beautiful and the deep blue color is appealing. If nothing else, it looks lovely on my bathroom shelf!

Pai is one of my personal go-to brands when my skin is feeling more on the sensitive side. The fragrance is divine, and I can almost feel this soft, silky oil repairing and calming my skin. It is particularly good for when I have spent just a little too much time in the sun. I know, I should not be doing that. Anyway, Rosehip is a power ingredient and has been scientifically proven to reduce sun damage (thank heavens!), minimize the appearance of fine lines, and possibly help with cell turnover. I have been using this oil for some time now, and it never lets me down. It is always on my counter, and I go back to it even when I have been lured away by other “oils of the day”. This oil, in particular, is perfect for mid-day when my skin is looking tired and dull. Just a few drops, pressed into the skin, seem to give new life to my afternoon face without leaving it too oily. To make it even better, it is organic and you use such a small amount that it seems to last forever. An enduring winner!

Okay, I have not tried this one yet. But the GP factor intrigues me, as does the fact that it is 99% organic. I list it here because I am curious about it and I’m hoping you will give me your feedback. The list of enriching ingredients is far too long to list here. It includes those known to be effective such as Jojoba Oil, Evening Primose Oil, Tocopherol; and Rose Geranium Oil, as well as a few less familiar ones, such as Poet’s Daffodil and Starseed Oil. I’ve ordered it and it is on its way to me as we speak, so I will give you an update. I would love to hear from any of you who have tried this “star” face oil. From all accounts, it was a long time in the making. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Every once in awhile I like to pat myself on the back when I am ahead of the game on a new beauty product ‘life changer’. Despite the fact that I am, quite frankly, a facial product addict—I am usually in on something right along with the rest of you. I find a beauty product after it has already hit at least semi-mainstream status. However, I was way ahead of the pack when it came to realizing the benefits of facial oils. Count back more years than I would like to admit and you would find me googling face oils, trying to find a major brand that carried one. I had a gut feeling that this ‘new’ beauty darling was going to be a winner. When everyone else was still afraid that oils would clog their pores and make their faces even more oily, I found that the new formulations would do just the opposite. Granted, at the time most of the oil products were focused largely on cleansing the face, but they worked. Not only did they clean my skin beautifully, they left it silky soft and smooth. No dry, flakey skin that was so tight after washing that my face cracked when I smiled. Just luxurious, supple beauty!

Facial oils have come a long way since those early days. The formulations are now so sophisticated that there are as many oils as there are skin issues. From ones that comfort and soothe to ones that aggressively combat aging with active ingredients such as retinol, you will find an oil to suit your needs. Originally my biggest problem was oily skin. Unfortunately, or maybe inevitably, my newest ‘problem’ is fine lines. They are creeping up on me at an alarming rate, but I refuse to give in. Every oil on this list is on my shelves right now, and I use them all depending on my focus at the time. I can attest to their effectiveness—and, in some cases, just the pure luxury of feel and fragrance. The best thing about them is that I can pat my face with them any time of day and, voila, I have a plumper more glowing complexion. Instant gratification!
